A BTEC Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Engineering equivalent to three A Levels
A Cambridge National Level 3 ICT/Computing Qualification (2 A level equivalent) plus A level computing.
In addition, students are offered the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) which carries UCAS points and equips students with the rigorous research skills, so critical in today’s job market.

|Behaviour Policy||NUAST is committed to providing high quality education. This means promoting positive attitudes and behaviour so that students can develop their abilities and interests and achieve their full potential.|
There is an inextricable link between behaviour and achievement. It is, therefore, essential that the academy promotes good behaviour and challenges unacceptable behaviour. This is a basic expectation that must underpin the daily work of the NUAST.
High expectations, shared values, fair and consistent application of rewards and sanctions; combined with effective teaching, active tutoring, and early intervention are key to promoting positive behaviour and raising achievement.
|Safeguarding/Child protection||NUAST's Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy set out guidelines to ensure that the rights of children are protected through staff awareness of the issues and the following of statutory and local guidelines in the reporting of concerns. |
Children and young people are defined as those under the age of 18 years.
In line with the Department for Education’s statutory guidance on “Keeping children safe in education. Statutory guidance for schools and colleges.” (2016) and “What to do if you’re worried a child is being abused” (2015) the policy gives guidance on the:

|Anti-bullying policy||NUAST believes that in order to enable effective teaching and learning to take place, good behaviour in all aspects of Academy life is necessary.|
NUAST’s definition of bullying is:
a. Bullying is not a one off event but is sustained and persistent over time.
b. Bullying is not ‘a bit of fun’, nor ‘playful’ but a deliberate intention or desire to inflict hurt, distress or humiliation, to intimidate, to threaten, or to frighten someone repeatedly over a period of time.
c. Bullying can be physical – hitting, pushing, tripping or invading ‘personal space’.
d. Bullying can be verbal – comments about an individual’s race, religion, size, sexual orientation, appearance, physical disability or mental disability.
e. Bullies can use the written word – notes, e-mails, MSN, text messages.
f. Bullies can manipulate social networks – by spreading rumours, making malicious accusations, and by seeking to side-line or ostracise individuals.
g. Bullies undermine and deny others opportunity.
h. Bullying can be cumulative and can build with the experience of success and status (through ‘getting away with it’), and may escalate.
i. Bullying may be perpetrated by a single person or by a group of people.
j. In adults, bullying is the abuse of power.
k. In children, bullying is the enjoyment of power.
NUAST does not condone and will deal with any behaviour which involves unwanted, unreasonable and offensive conduct, any form of discrimination that can include sexist or racist behaviour or negative attitudes to disability or sexuality and other examples of bullying
|Health and Safety policy||The Board of Directors of NUAST accepts that all of their employees, students and visitors are entitled to a safe and healthy environment in which to work. With this in mind the Board, Management and Staff will take appropriate steps to meets its statutory requirements use recognised codes of practice and guidance notes to establish a safe and healthy environment. |
NUAST's Health and Safety Policy is written within the context of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
It is the Policy of NUAST to take all necessary steps, through a risk management approach, to meet its responsibilities under “The Act”, including:
a. Providing and maintaining facilities, plant, equipment, systems and working conditions which are safe and without risk to the health of employees, visitors, contractors and the general public.
b. Ensuring that arrangements are in place for the safe transport, handling, storage and disposal of articles and substances which may be hazardous to health
c. Providing information, instruction and supervision to all employees to enable them to carry out their work activities in a safe manner
d. Ensuring that employees and/or their representatives are able to raise health and safety related issues and have these resolved effectively
e. Taking full account of health and safety considerations in project planning and decision making.
|First Aid Policy||Through this policy NUAST, seeks to effectively meet the first aid needs of staff, students and visitors, in particular supporting the Academy as a safe place to work, learn and engage. |
In accordance with regulations and guidance NUAST will ensure first aid provision appropriate to needs of its employees, students and visitors. The amount and type of first aid provision will be determined by risk assessment and reference to best practice including reference to the number of people usually on site.
|Complaints policy||NUAST's Complaints Procedure is designed to:|
a. Encourage resolution of problems by informal means if possible,
b. Be easily accessible and publicised,
c. Be simple to understand and use,
d. Be impartial,
e. Be non-adversarial,
f. Allow swift handling with established time-limits for action and keeping people informed of the progress,
g. Ensure a full and fair investigation by an independent person,
h. Respect people’s desire for confidentiality,
i. Address all the points at issue and provide an effective response and appropriate redress, where necessary,
j. Provide information to the Academy’s senior leadership team so that services can be improved.

|SEND Policy||NUAST aims to provide every child with access to a broad and balanced education, albeit specialist provision in science, engineering and information technology. This includes the National Curriculum, where relevant to this age group, in line with the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice 2014. |
In order to meet the Individual Needs of students, the Academy will:
a. Identify those who have SEND/Individual Needs at the earliest opportunity by gathering information from parents/carers, education, health and care services and feeder schools prior to joining NUAST
b. Monitor the progress of all students in order to aid the identification of those with SEND. Continuous monitoring of those students with SEND by their teachers will help to ensure that they are able to reach their full potential.
c. Make appropriate provision to overcome all barriers to learning and ensure students with SEND and other Individual Needs have full access to the curriculum. This will be co-ordinated by the SENCo (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) and will be carefully monitored and regularly reviewed in order to ensure that individual targets are being met and all students’ needs are catered for.
d. Work with parents to gain a better understanding of their child, and involve them in all stages of their child’s education. This includes supporting them in terms of understanding SEND procedures and practices, providing regular reports on their child’s progress, and providing information on the provisions for students within the Academy as a whole, and the effectiveness of this policy and the Academy’s SEND work.
e. Work with and in support of outside agencies when the students’ needs cannot be met by the Academy alone.
f. Create an environment in the Academy where students feel safe to voice their opinions of their own needs. This means providing regular one to one meetings between students and their teacher/Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) and will be made easier by carefully monitoring the progress of all students. Student participation is a right. This will be reflected in decision-making but also encouraged through wider opportunities for participation in Academy life such as membership of the School Council.
g. Provide ongoing training for all staff working with students with SEND/Individual Needs.
|Publication Scheme||One of the aims of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 is that public authorities, including all maintained schools and academies, should be clear and proactive about the information they will make public.|
To achieve this aim NUAST's publication scheme sets out:
a. The classes of information which NUAST will publish or intends to publish
b. The manner in which the information will be published
c. Whether the information is available free of charge or on payment.
The scheme covers information already published and information which is to be published in the future.
Some information which NUAST holds may not be made public, for example personal information.
NUAST's publication scheme conforms to the model scheme for schools approved by the Information Commissioner.
Anyone can make a request in writing for recorded information held by or on behalf of the Academy, and the Academy must comply promptly, and in any case within 20 term-time days. Unless subject to one of the 23 exemptions described by the Act, the information must be supplied.
|School Complaints Procedure||NUAST's Complaints Procedure is as follows, full details can be found in our Complaints Policy.|
1. Contact the member of staff that has given you cause for concern or get in touch with the Complaints Co-ordinator at the Academy. It is in everyone’s interest that complaints are resolved as quickly as possible. If you think that someone at the Academy has made a mistake or let standards slip, please contact the person responsible and they will try to sort out the problem straight away. If you do not know the person to contact, or would prefer to contact someone else to discuss your concern, ask for the Complaints Co-ordinator.

If you have a concern about the Complaints Co-ordinator and would prefer not to speak to that person, ask to speak to another staff member (e.g. another member of the Senior Leadership Team or the Principal). If your complaint concerns the Principal, the Complaints Co-ordinator can refer you to the Chairman of NUAST Board.
2. If you are not satisfied, you can make an official complaint.
3. If you have made a complaint but are unhappy with the way it has been dealt with or you are not happy with the outcome, you can make an official complaint to the Principal. You can contact the Principal using any of the methods described above. Your complaint will be investigated and you will be contacted within 14 working days with a response. If your complaint is complicated our investigations may take longer than 14 working days, but we will write to you and let you know when we will be able to give you a full response.
4. If you are still not satisfied, you can contact the Board of Directors
5. When we have fully investigated your complaint, and if you are still not satisfied, you can contact the Chairman of NUAST Board who will convene an independent Board Complaints Panel to look into your complaint, and notify you of the result and whether there is any further right of appeal.
|Charging and Remissions Policy||The Board of Directors of NUAST recognises the valuable contribution that the wide range of additional activities, including trips, clubs and residential experiences can make towards students' education. NUAST aims to promote and provide such activities both as part of a broad and balanced curriculum for the students of the Academy and as additional optional activities. |
The law states that education provided during Academy hours must be free. This definition includes materials, equipment and transport provided in Academy hours by the Academy. No student may be left out of an activity because their parents/carers cannot or will not make a contribution of any kind.
NUAST aims to make Academy activities accessible to students regardless of family income and to provide a process which allows activities to take place at a minimum cost to parents/carers, students and the Academy and which acknowledges the cost of such activities to the Academy’s budget.

The Academy is committed to challenging negative attitudes about disability and accessibility and to developing a culture of awareness, tolerance and inclusion.
Our Accessibility Plan has been drawn up in consultation with the students, parents/carers, staff and directors of the Academy and covers the period from September 2014-August 2017.

• To improve the attendance of all students to 95% and reduce persistent absence to be in line with National figures.
• To improve the achievement of SEND students and disadvantaged students and to narrow the achievement gap between SEND students & non-SEND students and disadvantaged & advantaged students
• To raise expectations amongst staff and students in order that 70% of young people on roll to make at least nationally expected progress each year in all core subjects.
• To ensure that young people who are eligible for pupil premium (in receipt of free school meals in the last 6 years or are a child in care) have adequate support so that they attend school regularly and that the majority make Nationally expected progress that is at least commensurate with that made by their peers.
• To review and revise the curriculum so that it represents a diverse culture and society and encourages tolerance and respect.
• To improve communication with parents and carers who are marginalised by personal circumstances such as lack of transport or low confidence by liaising with them regularly and meeting with them at least twice a year.
• To ensure that young people who attend NUAST have a voice through promotion of the student council and increased opportunities for wider student participation.
