Biology

Why Biology?

If you are looking to break into the world of Science, Biology is an ideal start. Biology allows you to better understand the world around us from the biological molecules that make up organisms, down to the macrostructure of an ecosystem. You will make informed decisions about contentious issues such as cloning and stem cell research.

What can I expect?

Our Biology course is taught by two tutors who both have 10 years of experience in delivering Biology. The course covers a wide range of topics including anatomy and physiology, genetics, conservation, ecology and biochemistry. You will be involved in practical investigations which allow the planning and evaluation of experiments.

Which Stem Pathways can I follow?

Biology is a facilitating subject on the following pathways:

Medical

Human Sciences

Computer Science

Maths

What enrichment opportunities will be offered?

During Year 12 you will have the opportunity to see biology in action with a visit to Attenborough Nature reserve, you will be looking at how biodiversity isimpacted in different ecosystems. Here you will be able to cover the ecological content of the specification.

Assessment

A Level Biology is a linear qualification which means that assessment will take place at the end of the course.

The A Level will be 100% externally assessed, there are no coursework elements. Students will be expected to complete 12 core practicals throughout the course. Teacher assessment of student skills, techniques and competency when completing practical work will count towards the Practical Endorsement at A Level. This is separate to the A level grade and if awarded, will be recorded as a ‘Pass’ on A Level certificates.

Requirements

Our general entry requirements are that you need 5 Grade 6s in your GCSEs to study A Levels. One of these Grade 6s must be Biology or Double Science. It is recommended that you have a grade 6 in maths, although this not essential.

Where can it lead?

A Level Biology is a requirement for University courses in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science and other medically related degrees. A Level Biology also provides a useful background to a wide variety of higher education courses including Nursing, Physiotherapy, Forensic Science, Sports Studies, Marine Biology, Human Sciences and Teacher Training.
