English Literature

Why English Literature?

You will not only develop excellent analytical and interpretative skills, but you will also hone your written and verbal communication through formulating convincing arguments in relation to a range of literature.  You will develop a strong understanding of different critical approaches to literature, including feminist and Marxist approaches.

What can I expect?

Our course is taught by a team who have extensive experience of teaching English Literature. The course covers an exciting range of literature including Shakespeare, modern and pre-nineteenth century poetry, modern drama and novels.  At the end of Year 1, you will prepare your non-exam assessment (NEA).  This is an extended comparative essay of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and a novel of your choice.

Which Stem Pathways can I follow?

As a facilitating subject, English Literature offers you a foundation for all degree subjects and careers.  You can therefore study English Literature in all Pathways at NUAST.

What enrichment opportunities will be offered?

We enjoy taking trips to the theatre and have recently seen performances of Shakespeare’s Julius Ceasar and Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful at Nottingham Playhouse.

Assessment

80% of the course is assessed by examination at the end of the 2-year course.  Paper 1 is a 3-hour exam, and Paper 2 is a 2-hour and 30-minute exam.  The NEA is worth 20% of the final mark.

Requirements

Our general entry requirements are that you need 5 Grade 6s in your GCSEs to study A Levels. One of these Grade 6s must be for English Literature.

Where can it lead?

A Level English Literature is a facilitating subject.  As such, it is valuable for applications to all courses in higher education.  Specifically, English Literature supports further study in Law, Education and Journalism.
