Senior Kangaroo Maths Challenge

William earns a Certificate of merit in the UKMT Senior Kangaroo competition

The Andrew Jobbings Senior Kangaroo is a follow-on round to the Senior Mathematical Challenge. It is a 60-minute Challenge consisting of 20 problems. Unlike the Senior Mathematical Challenge, the answer to each Senior Kangaroo problem is a positive integer less than 1000. Achieving a high score requires engagement with the problems, without the benefit of five options to choose from.

5 marks are awarded for each correct answer and merit certificates are awarded to any student achieving 45 marks or more. Will’s score of 55 gave him a comfortable merit award.

Several thousand qualifying UK-based students, following a high performance in the Senior Mathematical Challenge, are invited to take part in the Senior Kangaroo. In December 2021 NUAST had four participants invited to take part in the Senior Kangaroo.

Will cycles the 5.5 mile journey from home to NUAST each day in all weathers. He studies four A level subjects in mathematics, further maths, physics and engineering design. Will is looking forward to heading off to university in September 2022 to study engineering at University.

The UKMT are the UK member of the Association Kangourou sans Frontières, a collaborative association whose purpose is to promote mathematics among young people around the world. Around six million young people take Kangaroo competitions each year.

The name Kangaroo acknowledges the contribution made by Australia to establishing large-scale mathematics contests.

Our intermediate maths challenge competition took place this week (WC 30/01/22) – we look forward to sharing our results later in February.
