UKMT Junior Maths Challenge Success -
NUAST maths department congratulates our year 7 and 8 Junior Maths challenge participants.
This year we celebrate three gold certificate winners: Oscar, Yadav and Aaran all from year 8, with fourteen silver certificate winners (including eight students from year 7, with Charan achieving the Best in Year award) and sixteen bronze certificates. Oscar and Yadav both qualify for the follow-on Junior Kangaroo competition on 14th June.
The individual junior competition has over 700 000 entries each year from across UK schools, all year 8 and below. The highest-scoring students are invited to take part in the follow-on junior kangaroo round. The UK Mathematics Trust, who run the competition, was founded in 1996 and is based at the University of Leeds.
The Junior Mathematical Challenge is a 60-minute, multiple-choice challenge comprising 25 questions with only pen and paper allowed (no calculators). The challenge encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. The problems on the Junior Mathematical Challenge are designed to make students think.
Here are three of our favourite questions from this year’s Junior Maths Challenge paper
