GCSE Achievement

At NUAST, we believe that examination success allows our students to make the very most of their lives and student achievement is at the heart of everything we do.

Examination results provide a good indication of how well an academy is serving its students. In 2017, NUAST’s Year 11 students performed to the very highest levels in their GCSE examinations.

With a combined grade 5+ English and Mathematics figure of 50%, NUAST is amongst the highest performing schools in the city.

Results in the academy’s specialist areas were also very impressive, with the Science GCSE subjects achieving an 82% A*–C pass rate and Engineering Systems and Control securing an 87% A*–C pass rate.

Other highlights in what has been a hugely successful year included 67% grade 5+ in Mathematics and an amazing 90% A*–C pass rate in Chemistry.

A Level Achievement

For the second year in a row, students at NUAST delivered outstanding A Level and Level 3 qualification results. An incredible 46% of all A Level or BTEC entries achieved an A*–A grade, meaning that almost half of qualifications taken at NUAST achieved the highest levels. 84% of entries achieved an A*–C grade, demonstrating that our students are consistently achieving the highest level university qualifications.

Students studying the Level 3 Extended Diploma courses in Engineering or ICT achieved truly remarkable results. The average grade was Distinction* (Equivalent to A* at A Level). 93% of students on these technical courses achieved triple Distinction or higher, with most achieving Distinction*. Most of these students are able to go to university or their apprenticeship with the equivalent of three A or A* grades. NUAST really is the place to be if you want to study ICT or Engineering and achieve at a high standard.

The value-added score (the measure of students’ achievement compared to their previous performance at GCSE) was very high at 0.67. This is the equivalent of all students achieving on average two-thirds of a grade higher than their targets in all subjects. This will be one of the best value-added scores in the East Midlands and once again positions NUAST as one of the top-performing sixth forms in the city and county of Nottingham.

As you can see from the breakdown of results over two years, NUAST students have performed exceptionally well in both year groups that we have had since opening in September 2014. The 2016 A Level cohort outperformed all other state schools in the city and county of Nottingham. That success has continued in 2017 with a much bigger group of students who far exceeded their expected performance from GCSE.

NUAST works hard to ensure our students achieve their dreams and can progress to the next step of their education or career at the highest level.

Last year, 75% of students went to university, with the rest choosing either an apprenticeship, employment or a gap year. Crucially, every student who hoped for a university place secured one and all of our university applicants went on to STEM-related courses. In 2017, NUAST celebrated our first doctor (University of Sheffield), our first nurse and our first pharmacists, along with a host of civil, mechanical and electronic engineers, software engineers, chemical engineers, biochemists, physicists and mathematicians.

17% of our students went to our sponsor, The University of Nottingham, while one in three of our students went to one of the highly-prized Russell Group universities.

Our students taking apprenticeships have also been successful. One student is now an apprentice at Rolls-Royce, beating 35,000 applicants to one of just ten positions. Other students took apprenticeships at significant local and national engineering companies.

Example university destinations include Newcastle University, University of Leeds, University of St Andrews, The University of Nottingham, The University of Manchester and Loughborough University.

Example apprenticeship destinations include Rolls-Royce, Nestlé, Royal Navy, Arup, Donfabs & Concillia and KONE.
