Curriculum Intent: Food Preparation and Nutrition

Health is one of the most important features of studying food. Having a knowledge about the food we are supposed to eat, the food we are eating and its impacts on the human body is essential.

Within the context of a specialist STEM academy, Food Preparation and Nutrition focuses on practical cooking skills, ensuring students develop a thorough understanding of nutrition, food provenance and the working characteristics of food materials. Students draw from other subject areas such as Biology and Chemistry in an attempt to better understand food processes and improve food products.

At its heart, the curriculum focuses on nurturing students' practical cookery skills to give them a lifelong understanding of nutrition and the impact of dietary choices. Our curriculum ensures students understand the importance of maintaining good health, and gain key knowledge about the food we are supposed to eat, the food we are eating and its impacts on the human body. Our food scientists study the physical, microbiological, and chemical makeup of food and through our learning journey students make informed decisions about their future employment and education.
