Welcome to PE

Curriculum Intent: Physical Education

Physical Education at NUAST aims to provide a broad, engaging and challenging curriculum that allows all students to achieve beyond their expectations. As well as improving performance in a range of sports, we also aim to develop the social and emotional well-being of our students.

Our priorities:

  • Offer a wide variety of sporting opportunities
  • Build strong characters
  • Achieving excellence

The PE curriculum is flexible and can be tailored to suit the specific needs of the pupils. We offer excellent opportunities to develop a healthy life-long love of physical activity through first class teaching and learning, building successful, employable and physically active young people with a skill set that can be used throughout life.

Students will develop physical, technical and tactical skills; enhanced by an embedded focus on mental skills such as resilience, respect and confidence. They will experience a variety of opportunities and experiences that support this vision, challenging them inside and outside the classroom. Pupils will focus on improving their health, fitness and well-being through knowledge and application. Leadership skills also take a strong emphasis throughout, with students being able to take on additional roles other than just a performer.

Creating a love for Physical Education

Year 7 and 8 students will have a 2 hour PE lesson a week, focusing on improving their physical, social and emotional wellbeing through engaging in a wide range of sports and physical activities. They will become more competent, confident and expert in their techniques, and apply them across different sports. They should understand what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles to their own and others’ work.

Promoting Life Long Participation and Employability

Years 9, 10 and 11 students will have 1 hour of PE a week where we aim to continue the development of their character and physical competence as well as increasing their knowledge and understanding of the value of life long participation in Sport. This is done by ensuring lessons are both engaging and purposeful as well as additional opportunities for pupils to ‘try something new’ in the form of taster sessions. We are aiming to offer examinable PE commencing September 2021.

Extracurricular Sport

There is an extensive range of extracurricular clubs available to our pupils, providing them with the opportunity to participate with a ‘just for fun’ approach, or with a view to representing their school, region and county. The school enters partnership competitions on a regular basis giving pupils the chance to compete against other local schools. Clubs include; Football, Cross Country, Netball, Basketball, Table Tennis, Cricket, Rounders and Athletics. Students also have the opportunity to develop and gain leadership qualifications, this is run by the SGO’s from Sport Nottingham, this enabled 12 students from year 9 to assist with all three of our sports day which took place in July 2021.

Our end goal is that all students who attend NUAST leave us with a passion and enthusiasm for at least one sport or physical activity in whichever role (performer, coach, official, leader) they enjoy, thus enabling each student to lead a healthy, active lifestyle throughout their adult life.
