NUAST Maths department celebrates our Senior Maths Challenge results

On Tuesday 3rd October, fifty-two of our year 12 and eleven year 13 mathematicians took part in the 2023 Senior Maths Challenge with five students achieving gold certificates and qualifying for the follow-on kangaroo competition, taking place in November. These results mark our best ever performance from year 12, who have only rarely achieved gold certificates in the past but claimed all five certificates this year. A special congratulations to Isla who gained the best in school award. Thirteen Silver and Thirty Bronze certificates were awarded to our sixth form participants.
The UKMT, based at Leeds University was founded in 1996 and its individual challenges involve over 700000 entries each year. Qualification from the senior challenge is used to find participants to form the UK’s team in the International Mathematical Olympiad.
The challenges are designed to promote a love for problem solving, encouraging mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. The problems on the challenges are designed to make students think and must be completed without a calculator.
Years 9, 10 and 11 will be taking part in the intermediate maths challenge in February 2024 with the junior challenge for years 7 & 8 in April.
