Welcome to the Science Department

The Science department at NUAST offers GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. A Levels studied are Biology, Chemistry and Physics. We also offer students the opportunity to study and Extended Diploma in Applied Science; the equivalent of 3 A-Levels.

Curriculum Intent: Biology

As an integral part of a STEM academy Biology, Chemistry and Physics are delivered as individual sciences throughout all key stages.

The Biology department instils a curiosity and innate wonder in our students. Our curriculum inspires our students to observe, analyse and question, living phenomena from the microbial, plant and the animal world. Within Biology students develop their practical dexterity through experimentation and critical thinking. Through the practical application of mathematical skills students can analyse and interpret scientific data.

Our curriculum enables our Biologists to appreciate the magnitude of life on Earth; so that they can link and relate seemingly individual ideas together. Through our learning journey students make informed decisions about their future employment and education.

Curriculum Intent: Chemistry

As an integral part of a STEM academy Biology, Chemistry and Physics are delivered as individual sciences throughout all key stages.

The Chemistry department at NUAST develop future chemists who are inquisitive and thoughtful problem solvers. The behaviour of atoms, molecules, and ions determines the sort of world we live in. Chemists who understand these phenomena are very well equipped to tackle problems faced by our modern society. Our curriculum enables students to question chemical and physical processes, making links between theoretical and practical chemistry. Within Chemistry students develop their practical and mathematical dexterity through experimentation and analysis.

Within Chemistry, we forge the links between the other sciences enabling students to appreciate each of these to a greater extent. Our curriculum equips students with the practical laboratory skills and experience alongside careers knowledge to make informed decisions about their future employment and education.

Curriculum Intent: Physics

As an integral part of a STEM academy Biology, Chemistry and Physics are delivered as individual sciences throughout all key stages.

The Physics department encourages and inspires students to ask big questions; developing an innate fascination in the fundamental nature of reality and how the universe works. Students in Physics learn how to bring a broad perspective to any problem, are not afraid to make mistakes and work independently to solve novel problems. NUAST’s physicists carry out investigations in a scientifically rigorous way; asking questions, testing hypotheses, making observations and recording accurate data. Through the practical application of mathematical skills students are able to analyse and interpret scientific data.

Studying physics strengthens quantitative reasoning skills that are valuable in areas beyond physics; our curriculum builds on this to equip students with the requisite knowledge and experience to make informed decisions about their future employment and education.
